Kalshi vs sportsbooks in Texas
Why Kalshi is legal in Texas when sportsbooks are not
Texas has no legal sports betting: the legislature meets only in odd years, and every legalization bill to date has died without reaching the governor. No online sportsbook is licensed in the state. Kalshi is available to Texans because it is not a sportsbook — it is a CFTC-regulated derivatives exchange operating under federal law, listing event contracts on sports, politics, and economics that Texans can trade legally today.

What the fees look like
Kalshi's taker fee follows its published formula — a few percent of a contract's price-times-complement, highest at even odds — disclosed per trade. There is no "juice" hidden in the price: the odds you see are set by other traders, not by a bookmaker's margin, which is the structural difference from the offshore sportsbooks Texans otherwise encounter.
| Venue | Fee per contract | Total taker fee |
|---|---|---|
| Kalshi | 1.75¢ | $1.75 |
| Polymarket US | 1.50¢ | $1.50 |
Exchange-side taker fees per each venue's published formula (rate × contracts × price × (1 − price), Kalshi rounds the order total up to the next cent). Fees peak at 50¢ and shrink toward the extremes. Most quoted cross-venue “arbs” are negative-EV after these fees — the taker-fee breakeven on a Kalshi/Polymarket pair is roughly 3.5–4¢.
